«Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese in the years 1593-6. Since its first occupation, unlike many castles and fortresses, it has only once been abandoned, for a brief period, between May and August 1632. The original use as a barracks and fortress was continued by the Omani Arabs after they had captured it at the end of 1698, and was only terminated when the British Protectorate was proclaimed in 1895. It was then used as a prison for over sixty years, until 1958. In that year it was declared a historical monument, and the work of excavation and reconstruction, made possible by a generous grant from the Gulbenkian Foundation, was begun.»

Descrição

xvi, 327 pp.; il., 44 estampas.; 25 cm; cartonado.

«In Part I, Chapter 1, the Fort is described as a unity, and in Chapters 2-10 in its component parts. Building materials and the literary sources are discussed in Chapters 11 and 12. Lists of Captains, Viceroys of Goa, and Sultans of Oman, Mombasa, and Zanzibar are given in an appendix at the end of the book.

In Part II, the finds are discussed in five chapters: Chapter 13, the Ceramics, with eight sub-headings; Chapter 14, Glass; Chapter 15, Beads; Chapter 16, Cannon and Cannon-balls; and Chapter 17, Minor Objects, as a contribution to the study of the individual subiects to which they belong. All levels in the Fort were dump levels, so the circumstances in which any object was found is of limited significance.»
